Description / Comments
The protagonist is an unfortunate child burdened by the most insane parents imaginable with unsatiable greed, roping him into all kinds of unfortunate events as he grew up causing his personality to be warped as a result unable to ever really say no to anybody who seeks his help. His parents were so greedy that they summoned a demon and offered their child’s soul in an attempt to obtain riches. The protagonist is then whisked off to the demon’s world through little choice of his own, except the demon who bought him was simply a caring old bachelor grandpa who simply wanted a Grandson to pamper. As he is unable to say no, he ends up getting adopted by this grandpa and gets sent off to Demon School where his grandpa is the principal. He will now have to live his life in this hostile landscape where it can’t be found out that he’s a human, while living under the scrutiny of being the grandson of one of the most prestigious demons in the land.
This work is ultimately about Desires/Ambition, finding your passion and working to make it come true despite any hardships that might come your way. All of the characters in this work are amazing and get their time to shine and develop over the course of the series, not just the protagonist. There’s often full arcs dedicated to “side characters” that explore their thoughts and Desires, and how they grow as a person alongside the protagonist.
The work kind of alternates between intense plotlines that drive the plot forward, and chill slice of life segments to explore the characters’ lives more; Both are good. It’s useful to break up the constant tension that a larger plot-filled arc brings about with the chill sections so I can understand why it’s done this way, similar to how if you’re DJing you want to kind of mix fast/slow songs to give people a rest period. I feel like the author writes up ideas of what they might want to adapt in a notebook or something, and then while they’re doing an action arc they hash out the details for their next slice-of-life arc, and vice versa. And yet even still all of the arcs regardless of their actual content are 10/10 peak kino; there are no bad chapters.
The work does a good job of giving the protagonist an immediate goal of likely uniting everyone and becoming the Demon King. It leaves the overall process fairly open-ended outside of ranking up inside of the demon school while still giving an easy way to divulge their current progress by showing their ranks slowly increase along with the passing of time. It’s very simple yet effective and keeps you engaged the entire time while being easy enough for even kids to understand.
I also really enjoy how many different outfits the characters have. Obviously they’re in their uniforms most of the time since they’re in school but they also regularly have a bunch of other outfits outside of school or for special events that are really nice.
My favorite arc starts at volume 17 and is where I started to really love the series as a whole. It was good before then, especially the harvest festival arc directly before it, but I feel like it really got elevated around then. The anime should adapt this arc with season 4 so I will very much be looking forward to it. Find yourself a woman like purson’s mom tbh. The work continues to improve more and more as it goes along, and even if you don’t immediately vibe with the series I still feel like most people would enjoy it if they gave it enough of a chance. The 2nd year battler festival Art arc is both amazing and powerful. Although I also understand that “read it until you start enjoying it bro” isn’t necessarily feasible, and I don’t want someone to eventually hate the series by forcing themselves to read it either.
